The first year of a baby’s life is very important, in this period they will have accelerated growth and development. Many times we as parents leave the office worried, either because our children have not gained weight or height, or on the contrary they are overweight and their height is very high. We also have appetite concerns, and if they don’t eat enough, we usually ask for vitamins or any medicine that stimulates them to eat.
Therefore, it is necessary for us as parents to understand certain things:
0 to 6 months:
Breast milk your main food source.
In the first year of life, the main food for babies is breast milk, otherwise and only by prescription would be the formula. Then, the first six months of life the child is exclusively breastfed. Water, teas, granadilla water and any substance other than milk is prohibited.
From 6 months:
At this stage our children are ready to eat. Breast milk or formula (I insist only if prescribed) is still their main food and complementary feeding is for educational purposes. In this period they must learn the following:
- Wash hands before and after meals.
- Brush teeth after eating food.
- Eat fruits and vegetables as part of your daily routine.
- Try variety of foods.
- Drink water before other drinks.
- Have meal times.
- All of these points should be emphasized as children grow older.
Remember that all of this is a process and it is important for children to learn healthy habits from a young age.
